Overview

The University of Mississippi Field Station encompasses small rolling hills and valleys covered in mixed forest, old fields, and over 200 ponds, with numerous spring-fed streams and wetlands in north-central Mississippi. Geologically situated on the interior portion of the Gulf Coastal Plain, it is located within the Southeastern Plains (level III) and Northern Hilly Gulf Coastal Plain (level IV) ecoregions.

Portions of the University of Mississippi Field Station were a fish farm prior to acquisition by the University of Mississippi, while additional ponds were constructed by the Mississippi National Guard in the 1990s. This field station hosts the University of Mississippi's Center for Water and Wetland Resources and a research facility operated by the USDA Agricultural Research Service National Sedminentation Laboratory, which itself is based in nearby Oxford.

There have been 345 species of vascular plants recorded at the University of Mississippi Field Station, along with 132 aquatic beetles, 55 butterflies, 42 aquatic true bugs, 40 mammals, 25 snakes, 22 fish, 16 frogs, 12 salamanders, 10 turtles, and 9 lizards.

Notable among the recorded species is Etheostoma raneyi, the Yazoo darter, a species endemic to two watersheds in northern Mississippi.

In addition to peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, the University of Mississippi Field Station has an excellent set of within-house publications on various aspects of the field station (see the UMFS publications page). This field station has been well-mapped on OpenStreetMap and Google Maps, with publicly available GIS data. There are also many freely usable photos with Creative Commons licenses.
